What “Grande Remise” means ?

This name dates back to the seventeenth century (17th century) when the nobles were traveling in a coach.

In Paris, to deal with the problems of traffic and parking that already existed for the many coachmen in the service of the King and his Court, only remises (garages) were made available to them near the Louvre.

There were 2 types of remises, depending on the quality of the vehicle and its passengers:

  • The “carriages of place” or “cabs” were rented at the time or place, according to a regulated tariff. The coachmen waited in the Little Remise.
  • The more luxurious Coaches, rented by the day according to a specific rate.

The place of parking of these carriages were located near the Louvre in two separate buildings:

  • “La Grande Remise” for the large luxurious carriages reserved for the most important people and the great occasions;
  • And the “Small Remise”

Nowadays, the cabs of the Petite Remise correspond to the Taxis and the VIP carriages of the Grande Remise to the VTC (passenger vehicle with driver), a name confirmed by the Act of 1 January 2010.
